What was the highest denomination banknote issued by Zimbabwe?

The story behind the answer

The highest-denomination banknote issued by Zimbabwe was the 100 trillion dollar note.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe introduced it on 16 January 2009, during the country’s extraordinary hyperinflation. It belonged to the third Zimbabwean dollar, whose banknotes rapidly escalated from billions to trillions as prices surged and confidence in the currency collapsed.

The note was issued alongside 10 trillion, 20 trillion and 50 trillion dollar denominations. Its face value was 100,000,000,000,000 Zimbabwean dollars, but its real purchasing power was tiny: contemporary reports valued it at roughly US$30 when it entered circulation. The blue note depicted Victoria Falls and a Cape buffalo on its reverse.

A common mix-up is confusing Zimbabwe’s largest banknote with the world’s largest-denomination banknote. The 100 trillion dollar note was Zimbabwe’s record, but Hungary issued an even larger 1946 pengő note during its own hyperinflation. Zimbabwe’s note also had a short life: the dollar was abandoned in April 2009 as foreign currencies became widely used.
