What was the French name of Christian Dior’s 1947 Corolle collection?
Answer
Ligne Corolle
Answer
Ligne Corolle
Christian Dior’s 1947 Corolle collection was called Ligne Corolle, meaning “Corolla Line” in French.
Dior named the line after the corolla, the ring of petals surrounding the reproductive parts of a flower. The floral comparison reflected the collection’s rounded upper body, narrow waist, and full skirt, which spread outward like a flower in bloom.
The collection became famous internationally as the New Look after Carmel Snow of Harper’s Bazaar praised its radically feminine silhouette. Corolle was the original internal name, while New Look became the widely used press name.
This terminology can cause confusion because later Dior collections also used letter or flower-related names. Corolle belongs specifically to Dior’s debut 1947 line and should not be confused with the 1954 H-Line or 1955 A-Line.
