Answer
Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War
Emperor Hirohito's 1945 surrender document and broadcast was formally titled the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War.
Hirohito recorded the rescript after Japan's leadership accepted the terms of the Potsdam Declaration. It was broadcast to the Japanese public at noon Japan Standard Time on August 15, 1945, in what became known as the Gyokuon-hōsō, or “Jewel Voice Broadcast.”
The Emperor did not use the simplest modern wording to say that Japan had surrendered. Instead, the rescript used formal classical Japanese and referred to the military situation, the destructive power of a “new and most cruel bomb,” and the need to end the war to preserve civilization.
Many listeners found the recording difficult to understand because of its language, poor audio quality, and the unfamiliarity of hearing the Emperor's voice. The broadcast announcement preceded the formal signing aboard USS Missouri by eighteen days.
