The formal surrender document signed by Japan in 1945 was the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.

The instrument was signed on September 2, 1945, aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. It formalized Japan’s capitulation and marked the end of hostilities in World War II. Representatives of Japan and nine Allied governments signed it.

Mamoru Shigemitsu signed for the Japanese government, followed by General Yoshijiro Umezu for Japanese Imperial General Headquarters. General Douglas MacArthur then signed on behalf of the Allied powers.

The document is sometimes confused with the Potsdam Declaration, which was an earlier Allied statement setting out surrender terms. The Treaty of San Francisco came later, in 1951, and formally ended the state of war between Japan and many Allied countries.
