Answer
Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation
The Soviet campaign in Manchuria in August 1945 was formally called the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation.
The operation began on 9 August 1945, after the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. Soviet forces invaded Japanese-held Manchuria and attacked the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, as well as Mengjiang in Inner Mongolia. The offensive was conducted from several directions and rapidly overwhelmed the Japanese Kwantung Army.
In Western writing, the campaign is often called Operation August Storm. That is a later name rather than the formal Soviet designation. The invasion also included connected operations in areas such as northern Korea, southern Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands.
The Soviet attack became an important factor in the final crisis facing Japan. It began between the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and ended in the broader sequence of events leading to Japan’s surrender. The Kwantung Army officially surrendered on 16 August, although fighting continued in some areas until the formal surrender ceremony on 2 September.
