The Miami Heat first reached the NBA Finals in 2006. Miami defeated the Detroit Pistons in six games in the Eastern Conference finals, earning the first Finals appearance in franchise history.
The Heat then faced the Dallas Mavericks in a dramatic championship series. Dallas won the first two games, but Miami captured the next four to win the series 4–2. Dwyane Wade delivered a historic performance, averaging 34.7 points in the Finals and winning the Finals MVP award. Shaquille O’Neal provided interior scoring and rebounding, while veterans such as Udonis Haslem and Gary Payton contributed important minutes.
The 2006 championship was also Miami’s first NBA title. The franchise had entered the league in 1988 and had reached the Eastern Conference finals in 1997, but it had never advanced to the championship round. Later Finals trips came in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2020, and 2023, making 2006 the clear starting point for the Heat’s championship-era history.
