The first Tesla vehicle to use 4680 battery cells was the Model Y.

The first production applications appeared in Texas-built Model Y vehicles in 2022. These cars paired the larger-format 4680 cells with a structural battery pack, making the battery enclosure part of the vehicle's underlying structure rather than merely a removable energy container.

Tesla unveiled the 4680 format at its Battery Day presentation in September 2020. The name describes the cell's approximate dimensions: 46 millimeters in diameter and 80 millimeters tall. Compared with Tesla's 2170 cells, the larger format was intended to reduce the number of cells, simplify pack construction, improve energy density, and lower manufacturing costs.

The answer is sometimes confused because the Cybertruck also uses 4680 cells and became a prominent early application. However, the Texas Model Y entered production and deliveries first. Not every Model Y uses this format: Tesla has produced different battery versions using 2170, prismatic, and 4680 cells depending on factory, trim, and production period.
