What was the first search engine for FTP files?
Answer
Archie
Answer
Archie
The first search engine for FTP files was Archie.
Created in 1990 by Alan Emtage at McGill University, Archie indexed file listings from public anonymous FTP servers. Users could search its database to locate filenames across widely scattered archives, then connect to the relevant FTP server and download the file. It searched directory information rather than the full text inside each file.
Archie predates the World Wide Web and is often described as the first Internet search engine. Its name is derived from “archive” with the “v” removed, not from the comic-book character. Early versions gathered directory listings periodically, because constantly scanning remote servers would have consumed valuable network resources.
Veronica and Jughead are common wrong answers because they were also early search tools, but they searched Gopher resources rather than FTP archives. WebCrawler came later and indexed web pages, making Archie the canonical answer when the question specifically asks about FTP files.
