March 21, 1999
Answer
March 21, 1999
Pokémon Snap was first released in Japan on March 21, 1999.
Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, Pokémon Snap turned Pokémon into a photography adventure rather than a traditional catching-and-battling role-playing game. Players controlled Todd Snap, who travelled along fixed routes and photographed Pokémon in natural-looking environments.
The game was made for Nintendo 64. Its real-time 3D Pokémon and on-rails photography made it one of the franchise’s earliest console-focused spin-offs. Development initially targeted the Nintendo 64DD, but the project moved to a standard Nintendo 64 cartridge after delays affecting the add-on.
North America received Pokémon Snap on July 26, 1999, while PAL regions received it in September 2000. In Japan and North America, players could also print selected in-game photographs as stickers through participating stores.
