What was the first production car from Ferrari? The Ferrari 125 S. Built in 1947, it was the first car to carry the Ferrari name and marked the beginning of Ferrari as an automobile manufacturer.

The 125 S was created in Modena by Enzo Ferrari’s new company and used Gioachino Colombo’s 1.5-liter V12 engine. Only two examples were made. The car first raced at the Piacenza circuit on May 11, 1947, driven by Franco Cortese, and although it did not finish that debut, it soon delivered Ferrari’s first race victory at the Grand Prix of Rome.

The wording can cause confusion because Enzo Ferrari had already built the Auto Avio Costruzioni 815 in 1940. That car predates the Ferrari company’s road-car identity, but it was not branded Ferrari. The 125 S is therefore conventionally recognized as Ferrari’s first Ferrari-badged production car.

The “125” designation referred to the approximate displacement of each cylinder in its V12 engine. Later in 1947, the 125 S was replaced by the 159 S, beginning Ferrari’s rapid evolution of lightweight racing sports cars.
