What was the first Pokémon mobile game to use augmented reality and GPS?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Go was the first major Pokémon mobile game to use augmented reality and GPS-based location play.

Developed by Niantic in collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, Pokémon Go launched in 2016 for iOS and Android devices. The game uses a player’s real-world location to place Pokémon, PokéStops, and Gyms on a map based on GPS data.

Its augmented-reality mode can display a Pokémon through the phone’s camera, making it appear on the surrounding environment. Players can catch Pokémon, collect items, visit locations, and battle at Gyms, combining familiar franchise mechanics with outdoor exploration.

Pokémon Go was inspired partly by Ingress, Niantic’s earlier location-based game. It became a worldwide cultural phenomenon soon after release, but it is separate from the main handheld role-playing games and does not replace their numbered generations or traditional story structure.
