What was the first Pokémon game released outside Japan under the international title Pokémon Red and Blue?

The story behind the answer

The first Pokémon game released outside Japan under the international title Pokémon Red and Blue was Pokémon Red and Blue.

These versions were the overseas counterparts to Japan’s Pocket Monsters Red and Green. They were developed by Game Freak for the Game Boy and released in North America on September 28, 1998, after the Japanese debut in February 1996.

The international games used the name Blue even though the Japanese launch pair had been Red and Green. Their software, artwork, and distribution reflected the later Japanese Blue version, while the available Pokémon were arranged to preserve the original version-exclusive structure.

The games became the foundation of Pokémon’s global expansion. Europe received them in 1999, and the versions were later remade as Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen for the Game Boy Advance. Pokémon Yellow was an enhanced special edition rather than the original international pair.
