What was the first Pokémon game released internationally for the Nintendo Game Boy?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Red and Blue were the first Pokémon games released internationally for the Nintendo Game Boy.

Nintendo and its partners released Pokémon Red and Green in Japan in 1996. For international markets, the original pair was revised and localized as Pokémon Red and Blue. The games reached North America in 1998, followed by Europe in 1999.

Players explore the Kanto region, capture Pokémon, train them, and battle Gym Leaders before challenging the Pokémon League. Red and Blue were designed as complementary versions: some Pokémon appeared in one version but not the other, encouraging players to trade through the Game Boy Link Cable.

Pokémon Yellow followed internationally in 1999 and changed the opening to feature Pikachu as the player’s companion. Pokémon Stadium was a Nintendo 64 battle game, not the first international Game Boy release.
