What was the first planned phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed 1945 invasion of Japan?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the first planned phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed 1945 invasion of Japan.
Olympic was intended to begin on November 1, 1945, with Allied landings on southern Kyushu. The objective was to seize territory and airfields that could support the later invasion of Honshu, Japan’s largest island.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for the Kanto Plain near Tokyo in spring 1946. Together, Olympic and Coronet made up Operation Downfall, the broader invasion plan. Japan’s surrender in August 1945 canceled both operations before either began.
Olympic should not be confused with Operation Pastel, a deception plan designed to mislead Japanese planners about Allied intentions. The operation’s name later became associated with the 1945 invasion plans, not with any actual landing in Japan.
