What was the first planned phase of Operation Downfall, aimed at invading Kyushu in November 1945?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the first planned phase of Operation Downfall and was aimed at southern Kyushu.
The United States and its allies planned Olympic as an amphibious invasion scheduled for November 1945. Its objective was to seize the southern third of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. Allied planners expected captured airfields there to support a later assault closer to Tokyo.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for spring 1946 against the Kantō Plain on Honshu. Together, Olympic and Coronet formed the broader Downfall plan. Japan prepared its own defense plan, called Operation Ketsugō, to resist the expected invasion.
Olympic was canceled when Japan surrendered in August 1945. It therefore produced no battlefield casualties or landing campaign. The operation is sometimes confused with Operation Iceberg, the code name for the 1945 Allied invasion of Okinawa, which had already occurred and provided a potential staging base for Olympic.
