What was the first phase of the proposed Allied invasion plan Operation Downfall?

The story behind the answer

The first phase of the proposed Allied invasion plan Operation Downfall was Operation Olympic.

Operation Olympic was planned for November 1945 and would have invaded southern Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. Its proposed objective was to capture the southern third of Kyushu and establish bases for subsequent operations against the rest of Japan.

The second phase of Downfall was Operation Coronet, scheduled for early 1946. Coronet would have targeted the Kanto Plain near Tokyo on Honshu. Together, Olympic and Coronet formed the broader Downfall plan, which was abandoned after Japan surrendered in August 1945.

Operation Downfall was never executed, so its projected troop levels, casualties, and timetable remained planning estimates rather than wartime results. It is also easy to confuse Olympic with Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944, or Operation Torch, the 1942 Allied landings in North Africa. Olympic was specifically the planned Kyushu phase of an invasion of Japan.
