What was the first phase of the planned Allied invasion of Japan, scheduled for Kyushu in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the first phase of the planned Allied invasion of Japan, scheduled for Kyushu in 1945.

Operation Downfall was the overall Allied plan for invading Japan’s home islands if Japan did not surrender. Its first stage, Operation Olympic, was planned for November 1945 and would have landed Allied forces on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands.

The second stage, Operation Coronet, was scheduled for March 1946 and would have attacked the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshu. These operations were never carried out because Japan surrendered in August 1945 and formally signed the surrender document in September.

Operation Olympic is sometimes confused with Operation Neptune, the naval component of the Normandy invasion in Europe. It is also distinct from Operation Downfall, which names the complete two-stage invasion plan. Planning estimates for the invasion varied widely, and historians continue to debate the likely casualties and political consequences of an invasion that never occurred.
