What was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the canceled Allied invasion plan for Japan?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the canceled Allied invasion plan for Japan.

Olympic was scheduled for November 1945 and aimed to capture southern Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. The Allies planned to use Okinawa, which had been captured earlier in 1945, as a staging area for the invasion.

The operation was intended to secure airfields and other positions needed to support the second phase, Operation Coronet. Coronet was planned for spring 1946 against the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshu. Together, the two operations made up Downfall.

Japan anticipated a likely invasion and prepared Operation Ketsugō, a defensive plan for Kyushu. The Allied invasion was never launched because Japan surrendered in August 1945. Olympic is sometimes confused with Operation Neptune, the naval and airborne component of the Normandy landings, but they belonged to entirely different theaters and years.
