The first phase of Operation Downfall was planned for an invasion of Kyūshū.
This phase, called Operation Olympic, was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945. Allied planners intended to capture the southern part of Kyūshū and use its airfields and ports to support the later invasion of Honshu.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshu in spring 1946. Together, Olympic and Coronet formed Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands.
Kyūshū is sometimes confused with Okinawa, which had already been captured by the Allies and was intended as a staging area. It is also distinct from Honshu, the island targeted by the later Coronet phase. Japan’s surrender in August 1945 canceled both planned landings before either could begin.
