What was the first name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife, born Edith Bratt?

The story behind the answer

The first name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife, born Edith Bratt, was Edith.

Edith Bratt met Tolkien when they were teenagers in Birmingham. Their relationship was initially opposed by Tolkien’s guardian, Father Francis Morgan, who instructed Tolkien not to contact her until he reached the age of 21. Tolkien and Edith eventually reunited and married in 1916.

Edith influenced Tolkien’s mythology directly. He associated her with Lúthien, an Elven woman whose love story with the mortal Beren became one of the central tales of Tolkien’s legendarium. Tolkien later had the names Beren and Lúthien engraved on their shared gravestone.

Edith is sometimes confused with Mabel Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien’s mother, or Priscilla Tolkien, his daughter. Edith and Tolkien had four children and remained married until Edith’s death in 1971. Tolkien died in 1973 and was buried beside her in Oxford.
