What was the first Mac to feature a Retina display?

The story behind the answer

The first Mac to feature a Retina display was the MacBook Pro (2012), specifically the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display introduced in June 2012. Its screen offered four times the pixel count of the standard 15-inch MacBook Pro display, making text and images appear much sharper at normal viewing distances.

Apple marketed it as the “MacBook Pro with Retina display.” The model was a major redesign: it was substantially thinner, used solid-state storage, added USB 3.0, HDMI, and a second Thunderbolt port, and removed the optical drive and several older ports. It also introduced MagSafe 2 and a high-resolution 2880-by-1800 display.

A 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro followed in October 2012. Retina displays later spread across the MacBook, iMac, and other Apple products, but the 2012 15-inch MacBook Pro remains the first Macintosh computer associated with the Retina branding. The Mac Pro and MacBook Air received Retina displays much later, so neither is the answer.
