What was the first listed official UN theme for International Women's Day, used in 1996?

The story behind the answer

The first listed official UN theme for International Women’s Day, used in 1996, was “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future.”

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975, during International Women’s Year. In 1977, the General Assembly invited member states to observe a day for women’s rights and international peace. The annual theme system shown in the UN’s International Women’s Day listings begins with the 1996 theme.

The wording placed historical achievement and future action together. It reflected the UN’s effort to assess progress on women’s rights while continuing work on equality, peace, and development. The 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing provided important contemporary context, especially through its Platform for Action.

Several nearby themes are easy to confuse with the 1996 wording. “Women and the Peace Table” belongs to 1997, “Women and Human Rights” to 1998, and “Women Uniting for Peace” to 2000. The 1996 phrase is therefore the correct starting point in the listed annual sequence.
