Released in 2010, Tangled adapts the Brothers Grimm story “Rapunzel” into a musical adventure about Princess Rapunzel, whose magical hair is sought by Mother Gothel. The film was produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and rendered with computer-generated imagery rather than the studio's traditional hand-drawn process.

The wording matters because Disney had already made computer-animated films, including Chicken Little and Bolt, but those were not fairy-tale adaptations. Earlier Disney fairy tales such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and The Little Mermaid were traditionally animated. The Princess and the Frog, released just before Tangled, also returned to hand-drawn animation.

Tangled was not designed to look photorealistic. Its artists used CGI tools to imitate the warmth, curves, and painterly feeling associated with classic Disney animation. Frozen followed in 2013 as another computer-animated film inspired by a fairy tale, Hans Christian Andersen's “The Snow Queen,” but it came after Tangled.
