What was the first Diablo game released for a home console?

The story behind the answer

Diablo was the first Diablo game released for a home console.

The original Diablo debuted on Windows in 1996 and was later ported to the PlayStation in 1998. That PlayStation version brought Blizzard’s action role-playing formula to a home console and supported cooperative play for two players on the same system.

The game takes place beneath the town of Tristram, where the player descends through increasingly dangerous cathedral levels to confront the demon Diablo. Its randomized dungeons, loot system, and real-time combat became foundational features of the franchise.

Diablo II followed on Windows and macOS rather than receiving a contemporaneous original-console release. Diablo III later launched on consoles in multiple generations, but it was not the first Diablo title to appear on a home console.
