What was the first aircraft designed by the Wright brothers to carry two people in flight?

The story behind the answer

The 1905 Wright Flyer III was the first Wright aircraft designed to carry two people in flight.

Built at Huffman Prairie near Dayton, Ohio, the Flyer III incorporated lessons from the brothers’ earlier machines. It had improved control surfaces and a stronger structure, and it became the first practical airplane in their series. Wilbur and Orville used it for repeated flights rather than a single demonstration.

On October 5, 1905, Wilbur flew the Flyer III for 24 miles in 39 minutes 23 seconds, circling the field repeatedly. The aircraft could carry a pilot and passenger, although the brothers’ earliest successful flights were solo.

The 1905 Flyer is often confused with the 1903 Flyer because both were called “Flyer.” The 1903 machine proved powered flight; the substantially improved 1905 aircraft showed that controlled airplane operation could become practical.
