Answer
Kyūjō incident
The failed August 1945 coup attempt against Japan’s surrender was called the Kyūjō incident.
The attempted coup began late on 14 August 1945, shortly before Emperor Hirohito’s recorded announcement was broadcast. Army officers opposed to surrender tried to seize the Imperial Palace, prevent the recording from reaching the public, and persuade senior leaders to continue the war.
The conspirators searched for the recording of Hirohito’s speech, but palace officials hid and protected it. The plot collapsed during the night after senior officers refused to support it and the palace guards were brought under control. Several participants later died by suicide or were arrested.
The incident is also known as the Imperial Palace incident. It should not be confused with Japan’s earlier February 26 Incident of 1936, another attempted military coup that took place during the prewar period.
