What was the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s closing level at the 1929 crash’s 1932 low?

The story behind the answer

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41.22 at the 1929 Wall Street Crash’s low on July 8, 1932.

The crash began in October 1929 after years of speculative buying and margin debt. The Dow’s decline continued well beyond the dramatic trading days commonly associated with Black Thursday and Black Tuesday. By July 1932, the index had fallen about 89% from its September 1929 peak of 381.17.

The 1932 low was not the end of all economic damage: the Great Depression continued, and unemployment, bank failures, and falling prices remained severe. The Dow eventually recovered its pre-crash closing high in November 1954, more than two decades after the 1932 bottom.

This figure is a closing level, not an intraday low. It is also different from the percentage-loss records associated with individual trading days, which measure one session’s fall rather than the full decline from the 1929 peak.
