The default Windows XP wallpaper with a green hill was called Bliss.
Bliss is a landscape photograph taken by Charles O'Rear in January 1996 near the Napa–Sonoma county line in California. The image shows a vivid green rolling hill beneath a blue sky with cirrus and stratocumulus clouds. O'Rear used a Mamiya RZ67 medium-format camera and Fujifilm Velvia film.
The photograph was originally titled “Bucolic Green Hills” and was distributed as a stock image through Westlight, an agency O'Rear co-founded. After Microsoft obtained the full rights in 2000 through Bill Gates's Corbis, it renamed the image Bliss and selected it for Windows XP's Luna visual style.
Many people assume the image was digitally created or heavily manipulated, but O'Rear said he did not digitally enhance it. Another common mix-up is the location: guesses have included Ireland and New Zealand, while the real scene was in Sonoma County. The hill later returned to vineyard use.
