What was the date of Abraham Lincoln's birth?

The story behind the answer

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809.

Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin on Sinking Spring Farm near Hodgenville, in what was then Hardin County, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The family later moved to Indiana, where Lincoln spent much of his youth and developed the habits of reading and self-education that shaped his career.

Lincoln’s birthday is widely commemorated in the United States, especially in Illinois, the state where he built his legal and political career. February 12 is also part of the broader observance commonly called Presidents’ Day, although the federal holiday officially honors Washington and Lincoln is not individually named in the statute.

A common mix-up is the year: Lincoln was born in 1809, not 1808. Another is the location. He was born in Kentucky, moved to Indiana as a child, and later settled in Illinois, where he entered national politics and became the first Republican president.
