Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the codename for the planned U.S. invasion of southern Kyushu.
Olympic was the first stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Japan's home islands. It was scheduled for 1 November 1945 and would have landed U.S. forces on southern Kyushu, Japan's third-largest main island.
The second stage, Operation Coronet, was planned for the Kanto Plain near Tokyo in March 1946. Downfall was never carried out because Japan surrendered before the invasion began.
Military planners expected fierce resistance, drawing on Japan's preparations for homeland defense and the experience of earlier Pacific campaigns. The projected invasion helps explain why the final months of the war involved intense debate over military, diplomatic, and technological alternatives.
