What was the codename for the planned first phase of the Allied invasion of Japan, canceled after Japan surrendered?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the codename for the planned first phase of the Allied invasion of Japan.

Olympic was scheduled to begin on 1 November 1945 with landings on Kyūshū, Japan’s southernmost main island. It formed the first part of the larger proposed invasion plan known as Operation Downfall. The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for Honshū and was scheduled for March 1946.

The invasion plans were never carried out because Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration in August 1945 and formally surrendered in September. The atomic bombings, the Soviet entry into the war, Japan’s military situation, and internal political decisions all formed part of the complex chain of events that ended the war before Olympic began.

Operation Olympic is often confused with Operation Coronet or with Operation Downfall. Olympic was the Kyūshū phase; Coronet was the planned Honshū phase; Downfall was the overall invasion concept. These operations belong to the planning history of Japan’s surrender, not to battles that actually occurred.
