What was the codename for the planned Allied invasion of Kyushu during World War II?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the codename for the planned Allied invasion of Kyushu.

It was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the broader plan for invading the Japanese home islands. Olympic was scheduled for November 1945 and would have targeted southern Kyushu. A second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for March 1946 against the Kantō Plain near Tokyo.

The invasion plans were abandoned after Japan accepted surrender terms in August 1945. The atomic bombings, the Soviet declaration of war, Japan’s military situation, and political decisions within the Japanese government all contributed to the end of the war before Olympic could begin.

Operation Olympic is often confused with Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France in June 1944. It is also distinct from Downfall itself: Olympic named the Kyushu phase, while Downfall named the entire proposed invasion of Japan.
