What was the codename for the planned Allied invasion of Kyushu during the 1945 war with Japan?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the codename for the planned Allied invasion of Kyushu during the 1945 war with Japan.

Olympic was the first stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed full-scale invasion of the Japanese home islands. Allied planners intended to land on southern Kyushu on 1 November 1945, seize airfields and ports, and build the bases needed for a later assault on the main island of Honshu.

The invasion was never carried out. Japan accepted the Allied surrender terms in August, after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet declaration of war, and intense political debate within Japan. The formal surrender ceremony followed on 2 September.

Operation Olympic is often mixed up with Operation Coronet. Coronet was the planned second stage of Downfall, aimed at the Kantō Plain near Tokyo and scheduled for March 1946. Together, Olympic and Coronet show how seriously the Allies were preparing for a potentially extremely costly invasion before Japan surrendered.
