Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the first stage of the planned Allied invasion of Japan, targeting Kyushu.
Olympic was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, with landings on the southern part of Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island. The operation was intended to capture airfields and other positions that could support the later invasion of Honshu. It formed the first half of the larger Operation Downfall plan.
The second stage, Operation Coronet, was planned for spring 1946 and aimed at the Kanto Plain near Tokyo. Japan's surrender in August 1945 made both operations unnecessary. The planned Olympic force included a large U.S. Army and Marine contingent, supported by a major naval armada.
Operation Olympic is sometimes confused with Operation Ketsugō, Japan's defensive plan for resisting an Allied invasion. It is also confused with Downfall, which was the overall invasion plan rather than the Kyushu phase alone.
