What was the codename for the first planned phase of Operation Downfall, aimed at invading Kyushu?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the first planned phase of Operation Downfall and was aimed at invading Kyushu.

The Allied plan divided a possible invasion of Japan into two major operations. Olympic would have landed forces on southern Kyushu in November 1945, while Coronet would have followed on Honshu in March 1946.

Olympic planning included multiple landing areas, reserve forces, airborne units, and large numbers of troops transferred from other theaters. The campaign was designed to secure Kyushu as a base for the later advance toward the Tokyo region.

Japan surrendered before either operation began. This means Olympic is sometimes confused with Downfall, but the terms were not interchangeable: Downfall was the overall invasion plan, Olympic was its first phase, and Coronet was the second. The planned operation's scale illustrates how seriously Allied leaders considered a conventional invasion before Japan's surrender.
