What was the codename for the Allied invasion of Okinawa in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Operation Iceberg was the codename for the Allied invasion of Okinawa in 1945.

The operation began on April 1, 1945, when U.S. Army and Marine forces landed on Okinawa. It became the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific Theater and was intended to secure a base close to Japan’s home islands.

The battle lasted 82 days and ended on June 22, 1945, after organized Japanese resistance collapsed. Okinawa’s airfields, especially Kadena, were expected to support any future invasion of Japan. The island’s capture therefore influenced Allied planning during the months before Japan surrendered.

Operation Iceberg is often confused with Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. Downfall was never carried out because Japan surrendered before the planned invasion. Operation Olympic was the planned first phase of Downfall, aimed at southern Kyushu.
