What was the code name for the planned second stage of the Allied invasion of Japan?

The story behind the answer

Operation Coronet was the code name for the planned second stage of the Allied invasion of Japan.

Coronet was intended to follow Operation Olympic, the planned invasion of Kyushu. The target area for Coronet was the Kanto Plain near Tokyo, where Allied planners expected to establish a major bridgehead and advance toward the Japanese capital. The operation was scheduled for March 1946.

Together, Olympic and Coronet formed Operation Downfall, the overall Allied plan for invading the Japanese home islands. Downfall was never carried out because Japan surrendered in August 1945 and signed the formal surrender instrument on September 2.

These code names are frequently mixed up. Olympic was the first stage and focused on southern Kyushu, while Coronet was the second stage and focused on the Tokyo region. Operation Overlord was a separate Allied plan: the 1944 invasion of Normandy in German-occupied France.
