Answer
Operation Olympic
The code name for the planned November 1945 invasion of Kyushu was Operation Olympic.
Olympic was the first stage of Operation Downfall, the broader Allied plan to invade Japan’s home islands. Its objective was to seize the southern portion of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, and establish airfields and staging areas for a later advance.
The planned landing date, called X-Day, was November 1, 1945. The United States Sixth Army was assigned to the operation, and Allied planners expected to land at several locations, including areas near Miyazaki, Ariake Bay, and Kushikino. Okinawa, captured earlier in 1945, was designated as a major staging base.
Olympic is often confused with Operation Coronet. Coronet was the second phase of Downfall, intended for Honshu near Tokyo in spring 1946. Neither operation took place. Japan’s surrender in August 1945 ended the need for the invasion, so the code name Olympic remains associated with a canceled operation rather than a battle.
