Operation Olympic was the planned first stage of Operation Downfall, targeting southern Kyushu.
The operation was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945. Allied forces intended to land on southern Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, and seize territory and airfields that could support a later assault on the Tokyo region.
Olympic was part of a larger two-stage strategy. Operation Coronet would have followed in spring 1946 with an invasion of the Kanto Plain near Tokyo. The surrender of Japan made both operations unnecessary, so Olympic never became an actual campaign.
Some planning documents used the alternate name Operation Majestic after the original code name became compromised. Operation Pastel, meanwhile, referred to a deception plan intended to mislead Japanese defenders about the location and nature of the Allied attack. These related names are why Olympic is best identified by its direct link to southern Kyushu.
