Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the code name for the planned first phase of invading Japan in 1945.
Olympic was designed to land Allied forces on southern Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, on November 1, 1945. The goal was to seize airfields and other positions that could support the later invasion of Honshu, the island containing Tokyo.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for March 1946 and would have targeted the Kantō Plain near Tokyo. Both phases together formed Operation Downfall, the overall plan for the invasion of Japan’s home islands.
Japan surrendered before Olympic began. The planned invasion therefore became a subject of historical debate about expected casualties, but no single casualty total can be treated as a confirmed outcome because the operation never occurred. Olympic should also not be confused with Operation Overlord, the 1944 Normandy invasion.
