Answer
Operation August Storm
Operation August Storm was a common code name for the Soviet 1945 offensive against Manchuria.
The campaign is also known as the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation or simply the Manchurian Operation. It began on August 9, 1945, when the Soviet Union attacked the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo and related Japanese positions in northeastern Asia.
The Red Army advanced through terrain that included deserts, mountains, and fortified areas. Its rapid movement overwhelmed the Japanese Kwantung Army, which had once been regarded as one of Japan’s strongest military formations. Soviet forces also seized southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands and entered northern Korea.
Operation August Storm is sometimes confused with Operation Downfall, the planned Allied invasion of Japan’s home islands. Downfall was never carried out because Japan surrendered before the invasion could begin. The Soviet offensive instead became one of the decisive military developments of the final weeks of World War II.
