Answer
Operation August Storm
Operation August Storm was an alternative name for the Soviet invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria in August 1945.
The campaign began on August 9, 1945, when Soviet forces attacked the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo from several directions. Its formal military name was the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation, and it is also called the Manchurian Operation.
The Red Army advanced across a huge area using coordinated attacks from the east, west, and north. Soviet forces rapidly overwhelmed the Kwantung Army, which had once been regarded as one of Japan’s strongest military formations but had been weakened by transfers to other fronts.
The operation is closely connected with Japan’s surrender because it removed the possibility of Soviet mediation and threatened Japanese control in Northeast Asia. “August Storm” is not the same as Operation Downfall, the canceled Allied plan to invade the Japanese home islands.
