What was the Allied plan for invading Japan in World War II called?

The story behind the answer

The Allied plan for invading Japan in World War II was called Operation Downfall. It was a proposed two-stage invasion intended to force Japan’s surrender if the country did not capitulate after the 1945 bombing campaign and blockade.

The first stage, Operation Olympic, planned landings on Kyushu in November 1945. The second stage, Operation Coronet, was planned for the Kanto Plain near Tokyo in March 1946. American planners expected extremely heavy fighting because Japanese forces were preparing to defend the home islands.

Operation Downfall was never carried out. Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration in August 1945, after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war. Operation Downfall is often confused with Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of German-occupied Normandy in June 1944.
