Answer
Operation August Storm
Operation August Storm was the Allied nickname for the Soviet 1945 invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria.
The Soviet offensive began on August 9, 1945, shortly after the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. Soviet forces attacked Japanese-controlled Manchuria from multiple directions, while also striking Japanese positions in Inner Mongolia and northern Korea. The main Japanese opponent was the Kwantung Army, which had once been one of Japan’s most powerful formations.
The operation is also called the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation or simply the Soviet invasion of Manchuria. The name “August Storm” became common in Western historical writing, especially after American military historian David Glantz used it for a study of the campaign.
The offensive began between the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan’s leaders had hoped the Soviet Union might mediate with the Western Allies, so the Soviet attack destroyed an important diplomatic expectation as well as a major military position. Fighting continued in some areas after Japan announced surrender.
