What was the actual hill where the Battle of Bunker Hill was mainly fought?
Answer
Breed's Hill
Answer
Breed's Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill was mainly fought on Breed’s Hill.
The battle took place on June 17, 1775, during the Siege of Boston. American forces fortified Breed’s Hill on the Charlestown peninsula, while British troops launched repeated assaults to capture the position. The fighting produced heavy British casualties before the Americans withdrew after running out of ammunition.
The battle became known as Bunker Hill because Bunker Hill was the larger and more prominent nearby height, and early plans referred to it. Most of the combat, however, centered on Breed’s Hill. This naming difference is one of the best-known geographic details of the Revolutionary War.
The battle was technically a British victory because British forces captured the ground, but it demonstrated that colonial troops could resist regular soldiers. General Israel Putnam, Colonel William Prescott, and other American commanders became associated with the defense. The engagement occurred before the Declaration of Independence.
