What was the 2000–2002 collapse of technology shares commonly called?

The story behind the answer

The 2000–2002 collapse of technology shares was commonly called the dot-com crash.

The crash followed a speculative boom in internet-related companies. Investors assigned very high values to firms with little revenue or profit, and many businesses were funded on expectations of future online growth rather than established earnings. The Nasdaq Composite peaked at 5,048.62 on March 10, 2000.

After sentiment changed, technology shares fell sharply. The Nasdaq lost roughly 78% of its value from its peak to its October 2002 low. Numerous internet companies failed, while profitable technology firms also experienced major share-price declines.

The dot-com crash is not the same as the 2008 financial crisis. It centered on equity valuations and technology speculation, whereas 2008 involved housing finance, mortgage securities, bank losses, and a global credit shock.
