What was the 1989 U.S. market event triggered by the failed United Airlines takeover called?

The story behind the answer

The 1989 U.S. market event triggered by the failed United Airlines takeover was called the Friday the 13th mini-crash.

On Friday, October 13, 1989, a proposed leveraged buyout of United Airlines collapsed. The deal’s failure helped unsettle investors because it raised concerns about junk bonds, leveraged acquisitions and the financial institutions supporting them.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 190.58 points, or about 6.91 percent, in a single session. The decline was concentrated in the United States, although markets elsewhere also reacted. It became the largest one-day percentage fall for the Dow since the 1987 crash at that time.

This event is distinct from Black Monday in October 1987. Its name refers to the calendar date rather than a general label for a market collapse, and the decline did not produce the same worldwide trading breakdown seen in 1987.
