What was the 1989 U.S. market crash on 13 October commonly called?

The story behind the answer

The 1989 U.S. market crash on 13 October was commonly called the Friday the 13th mini-crash.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 190.58 points, or 6.91%, in a single session. The decline was linked partly to the collapse of a proposed leveraged buyout of United Airlines, which unsettled investors and contributed to broader selling.

The episode was much smaller than Black Monday in 1987, so the word “mini-crash” became part of its usual name. It also occurred on a Friday that fell on the 13th, giving the event its memorable calendar-based label.

This crash is sometimes confused with the 1987 Black Monday or with later technology-related market declines. The Friday the 13th event was a brief U.S. equity shock, not the start of the long dot-com crash or a worldwide banking crisis.
