Operation August Storm
Answer
Operation August Storm
The 1945 Soviet campaign against Japanese forces in Manchuria was sometimes called Operation August Storm.
The campaign began on August 9, 1945, when the Soviet Union invaded Japanese-occupied Manchuria and the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. Soviet forces attacked from multiple directions with a large mechanized offensive, overwhelming the Kwantung Army and rapidly advancing through northeastern Asia.
The name “Operation August Storm” became common in some Western historical writing, while the Soviet term was the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation. The invasion began between the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and became a major factor in the Japanese government’s decision to surrender. It should not be confused with Operation Barbarossa, Germany’s 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union, or Operation Bagration, the Soviet offensive against German forces in 1944.
