What was Stevie Wonder’s first stage name at Motown?

The story behind the answer

Stevie Wonder’s first stage name at Motown was Little Stevie Wonder.

Motown signed the young Stevland Morris in 1961 after Ronnie White of the Miracles helped introduce him to the label. Producer Clarence Paul initially helped shape his presentation, and the label promoted him as “Little Stevie Wonder,” emphasizing both his age and his striking musical ability.

The name became especially prominent after his early live performances and recordings, including “Fingertips,” which turned him into a national star while he was still a child. As Wonder matured, the word “Little” was dropped, leaving the stage name by which he became internationally known.

This detail is easy to confuse with “Little Stevie,” an informal shortening, or with “Stevie Wonder,” the later permanent form. Motown’s early branding was part of a broader tradition of giving young performers memorable stage identities, but Wonder eventually became closely associated with his own chosen artistic identity.
